Taşranın dışına bile çıkmamış bu gençler yeterince olgunlaştıklarını sanarak kendilerinin önemli kişiler olarak görmektedirler, ancak zamanla sadece kendilerini kandırmış olduklarını anlayacaklardır. Zaten filmin özgün adı olan "I Vitelloni" fazla irileşmiş, büyümüş ancak halâ verim alınamayan dana anlamına gelmektedir ve bu filmden sonra İtalyanca argosuna girmiş bir kelimedir. Filmdeki gençlerin de, aslında yaşları hayli ilerlemiş olmasına rağmen ortada henüz ürettikleri bir şey yoktur.

Part I, by Pasolini, is a denunciation of the offenses of Western culture, particularly those against colonized Africa. It is at the same time a chronicle of the liberation and independence of the former African colonies, portraying these peoples as the new protagonists of the world stage, holding up Marxism as their "salvation", and suggesting that their "innocent ferocity" will be the new religion of the era. Guareschi's part, by contrast, constitutes a defense of Western civilization and a word of hope, couched in traditional Christian terms, for man's future.

Agostina is a maid turned prostitute during World War II. She sends all the money she makes to the local priest in her home village for safekeeping. After the war is over Agostina and her friend Australia plan to open a clothing store so they return to her home island to collect the money from the priest. But after arriving there Agostina learns in shock that the priest has been dead for more than a year and that his eccentric successor mistook the received money for donations and spent all of it on building a new orphanage for war orphans. To make matters even worse, other islanders think that Agostina is now a millionaire and beg her to help them financially.
