Filmde 1951 yılında Kore Savaşı sırasında cephenin gerisinde görev yapan ve MASH ('Seyyar Ordu Cerrahi Hastanesi' anlamına gelen 'Mobile Army Surgical Hospital' kelimelerinin baş harflerinden oluşan bir kısaltmadır) adı verilen sahra hastanelerinden birinde görev yapan ve genel olarak 'kasap' olarak adlandırılan bir grup cerrah ve yardımcı personelin serüvenleri anlatılmaktadır. Bu cerrahlar ekibinin hiç biri meslekten asker değildir. Buraya sivil hastanelerden gelmişlerdir. Dolayısı ile askeri disiplin buradaki çadır hastanelerde en son görülecek şeydir. Her gün yapılan ağır ameliyatlar, kesilen uzuvlar, ölen insanlar ve savaşın diğer acıları arasında gülmeye, eğlenmeye ve gırgırlarını geçmeye vakit bulabilirler, tabii asli görevlerini hiç aksatmadan. Aslında filmde tek bir çarpışma sahnesi yer almaz, buna rağmen MASH en büyük savaş karşıtı filmlerden biridir...

Klasik bir kült olan bu filmde alışılmadık bir çifti izliyoruz. Ekranlarda görmeye alışık olduğumuz türden çiftlere ait bildiğimiz ne varsa tümüne meydan okuyan bir birliktelik. Harold olarak izlediğimiz Bud Cort, zenginliğinden sıkılmış ve tüm ilgisine ölüme vermişa. Maude ise hayat hakkında pek çok şey bilen eski bir serseridir. Senaryosu Colin Higgins'e ait olan filmi Hal Ashby yönetmiş. Sevginin sınır tanımadığına dair eğlenceli ve etkileyici bir film. Müzikler ise Cat Stevens'e ait.
