Germany, January 1939: a day in a concentration camp. Subjected to harsh military discipline the hungry prisoners are digging a huge hole and filling it up again. Several are tortured, die of exhaustion, in the electric fence, or are shot.

Theodor Storm's novella, now dramatized, deals with envy and hard-heartedness, but also with loyal friendship and affection. Generations love the story of Paul and Lisei, of the puppeteer Tendler and Kröpen-Lieschen. But above all, they love the actual “heroes”: the beautiful Genoveva, the evil Golo, and the funny Kasper.

At the center of the story are building contractor Patschold, who juggles advances and loans, and his shrewd chauffeur Göhrke. Patschold's wife almost suffers a nervous breakdown and his mistress makes ever greater demands.
