İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Eric Lomax, Singapur’da Japonlar tarafından yakalanan ve POW kamplarına gönderilen İngiliz bir memurdur, bu kamplarda Tay-Burma Demir Yolunda çalışmak zorundadır. Kampta geçirdiği zamanlarda bir memur tarafından işkence görür ve arkadaş bir POW ile karşılaşır. Yıllar sonra ve savaşta yaşadıklarının psikolojik travmalarının acısını çekerken Lomax, eşi Patti tarafından kendisini yakalayanları bulması ve onlarla yüzleşmesi konusunda baskı görür. En yakın arkadaşı kendisine eşlik ederken, Lomax işkence sahnelerine geri döner ve kendisini tutan Japon görevli Takashi Nagase ’yı bulmayı başarır, acının ve nefretin yaşamından kendini uzaklaştırma niyetindedir..
