Adam Pawlikowski

Akademi Onur Ödülü ile ödüllendirilmiş Polonyalı yönetmen Andrzej Wajda'nın yönettiği filmin senaryosunu 1948 tarihli aynı adlı kendi romanından Jerzy Andrzejewski uyarlayıp yazmıştır. Filmin adı, filmin kahramanının bombardımanda yıkılmış bir kilisenin duvarında gördüğü 19. yy'da yaşamış Polonyalı şair Cyprian Norwid'a ait bir şiirden gelmektedir. Şiirin dizelerinde, kömürün yüksek ısı ve basınç altında elmasa dönüşmesi olgusuna bir gönderme yapılmaktadır. Filmde, Polonya'da Nazi işgalcilere karşı bir zamanlar zorunlu olarak işbirliği yapmış olan Milliyetçi güçlerin ve Komünistlerin aralarındaki bu ittifakın artık çatırdamaya başladığı 2. Dünya Savaşı'nın son günlerinde, taşralı Milliyetçi bir militan olan Maciek (Zbigniew Cybulski) etkili bir Komünist lideri öldürmekle görevlendirilir. Görevi sırasında kaldığı otelde hayata dair farklı şeyler hissetmeye başlar, bir seçim yapıp sonuçlarına da katlanmak zorunda kalacaktır.

Polonyalı yazar Jan Potocki’nin Türkçe’ye de çevrilmiş romanından uyarlanan film, Napolyon Dönemi’nde bir savaş esnasında, Zbigniew Cybulski tarafından canlandırılan ana karakterin bir el yazması bulmasıyla başlayan olayları takip eder. Film, göz alıcı bir siyah beyaz görsellikle desteklenen masalsı atmosferi, hikaye içinde hikaye şeklinde özetlenebilecek yapısıyla kusursuz bir uyum göstererek seyircinin de bu rüya içinde kaybolmasını sağlıyor. Çekildiği dönemin ardından neredeyse unutulan bu gerçeküstücü epik, bugünkü kült statüsünü Martin Scorsese ve Francis Ford Coppola tarafından keşfedilip, batılı seyircilerle buluşturulmasına borçlu. Bu iki ustaya ek olarak Luis Bunuel, David Lynch, Neil Gaiman gibi isimlerin de filmin hayranları arasında bulunduğunu belirtmekte fayda var.

Film, konusunu 1944'te Polonya'da Nazi işgaline karşı başlatılan Varşova ayaklanmasından alır. Ayaklanma sırasında geri çekilmek zorunda kalan bir Polonya müfrezesi, başka bir çatışma alanına gitmek için şehrin kanalizasyonlarını kullanır. Müfreze kanalda üç gruba ayrılır, film bu üç grubun hikayelerini birbirlerinden bağımsız, paralel olarak anlatır. Bir yerde Almanların amansız takibi, bir yerde iç çatışmalar, bir yerde de kanalın karanlığı, açlık, susuzluk gibi etkenler üç grubun trajik sonlarını hazırlar.

The story takes place before World War II and centers on Pawel, a member of a conservative, middle-class family, and his love for Lidka, a taxi dancer. Social conventions and the lovers' inability to defy those forces Pawel and Lidka benefit. Times change, war breaks out, leading to Pawel sent to Auschwitz while Lidka marry his cousin. Their love has survived and conventions are no longer the issue.

A young Bulgarian inspector Georgiev is in Warsaw to lead an operation to defraud and capture a Dutch-based gang leader involved in currency crimes. To accomplish this task, he needs to use Jeanne as a "decoy duck". She's Bulgarian, married to a gang member.

Twin brothers, Jacek and Placek, are the town's troublemakers. They're lazy, greedy and also cruel. They despise hard work, so they cook up a plan to make easy money that would make them rich for the rest of their lives: steal the moon and sell it. They set on a journey to find a place where the moon would be low enough for them to steal. Before they leave, they take the last loaf of bread from their poor hardworking mother. After numerous adventures the boys manage to catch the moon in a fishing net. But it is only the beginning of their troubles.

The Italian soldier Giuseppe Santucci, on his way home from the Russian front has his machine gun stolen in Warsaw. Afraid of consequences, he stays in Warsaw and occupies a flat of the Polish girl Maria, whom he suspects of stealing weapon. Maria indeed is an active member of the Polish resistance, contrary to her brother, Staszek, a painter, who only wants a calm living. In a course of events Giuseppe falls in love and, along with Staszek, becomes a hero of the Polish resistance.
