For 350 years, the Pfandlbräu brewery in Greimeling thrived, but production has fallen from 20,000 to 8,000 hectoliters annually. Michel Pfandl, a music-loving bachelor ill-suited to business, faces bankruptcy pressure from the house bank. They demand he marry widowed brewer Sophie to merge their fortunes. When he refuses, the bank initiates insolvency proceedings, forcing Michel to confront the brewery’s future and his own values.

Young Sonja is accused of murdering her boyfriend Manfred. The film reveals her background, which remains hidden in court: the half-orphan girl becomes pregnant by Manfred, has an abortion and is sent to a reformatory for it. Manfred gets her pregnant again and then leaves her; desperate and humiliated, she shoots him. In court she remains defiant and silent. On the last day of the hearing, a deus ex machina appears: the figure skater Hans-Jürgen Bäumler, Sonja's great idol, descends from the sky and floats with her over the roofs of Regensburg.

The rich and fun-loving brewery owner Xaver Bogenrieder has died. After the funeral, the mourners come to the pub for the funeral feast. The first trouble is already inevitable: It's all about the succession to the Unterbräu and which of the dignitaries will court the beautiful widow. The master brewer, who has long been a silent admirer of the widow, doesn't like this at all. Then the shepherd gives him an idea. The Unterbräu simply has to go around as a ghost, then the false admirers will stay away. Unfortunately, the gravedigger has the same idea, without the one knowing about the other.

After the dashing Bavarian Lena Mayerhofer catches her future husband having a fling with her bridesmaid, she flees to Berlin to take over her Aunt Käthe's long-established bakery. Her gay friend Donald is there to give her advice and support.

Polizeiruf 110 is a long-running German language detective television series. The first episode was broadcast 27 June 1971 in the German Democratic Republic, and after the dissolution of Fernsehen der DDR the series was picked up by ARD. It was originally created as a counterpart to the West German series Tatort, and quickly became a public favorite.

The TV show is based on Purucker's radio play series Die Grandauers und ihre Zeit (‘The Grandauers and their time’). The series’ main title "Löwengrube", meaning ‘Lions’ Den’, refers to the address of the Munich Police Headquarters inaugurated in 1913.
