Akademi Onur Ödülü ile ödüllendirilmiş Polonyalı yönetmen Andrzej Wajda'nın yönettiği filmin senaryosunu 1948 tarihli aynı adlı kendi romanından Jerzy Andrzejewski uyarlayıp yazmıştır. Filmin adı, filmin kahramanının bombardımanda yıkılmış bir kilisenin duvarında gördüğü 19. yy'da yaşamış Polonyalı şair Cyprian Norwid'a ait bir şiirden gelmektedir. Şiirin dizelerinde, kömürün yüksek ısı ve basınç altında elmasa dönüşmesi olgusuna bir gönderme yapılmaktadır. Filmde, Polonya'da Nazi işgalcilere karşı bir zamanlar zorunlu olarak işbirliği yapmış olan Milliyetçi güçlerin ve Komünistlerin aralarındaki bu ittifakın artık çatırdamaya başladığı 2.
