Philadelphia’da Whitefield’ın etkileyici vaazlarıyla tanışan Franklin, onun sesi ve hitabetinden büyük ölçüde etkilenir; ikili zamanla yakın bir dostluk kurar ve Whitefield’ın vaazlarının yayımlanmasında birlikte çalışır. Yıllar sonra Franklin, Whitefield’ın kendisine yaptığı inanç çağrısını yeniden düşünmeye başlar. Deist görüşleri nedeniyle uzun süre mesafeli duran Franklin, sonunda Tanrı’ya yönelir ve bu içsel dönüşümün ardından Anayasa Konvansiyonu’nda delegeleri dua etmeye davet eden tarihi konuşmasını yapar.
