Babenco, bir isyan olarak başlayıp bir katliama dönüşen olayı ('9. Koğuş Katliamı'), öykünün merkezine AIDS'le mücadele için hapishaneye gelen, idealist bir doktor karakterini koyarak işlemeyi tercih etmiş. Zamanla hapishanedeki farklı grupların saygısını kazanan doktor, hızla gelişen olaylar karşısında çaresiz kalıyor.
