Norman (Normandiya'da yaşayan Frenk ve İskandinav kökenli halk) şövalyesi Jean de Carrouges ve Norman beyi Jacques le Gris eskiden çok yakın arkadaşlardır. Carrouges savaşa gider ve döndüğünde hiçbir şey eskisi gibi değildir. Le Gris, Carrouges'in karısına tecavüz etmek suçundan yargılanıyordur. Ancak kimse Margerite'e inanmaz. Bunun üzerine asker, karara itiraz etmek üzere Fransa kralına kadar gider. Hakim açısından ise Le Gris avantajlı konumdadır. Mahkemenin yeni kararına göre iki adam düello yapacak ve bu düellonun sonucunca biri ölecektir. Hayatta kalan kişi Tanrı'nın isteğini yerine getirmiş olacak ve eğer ki Le Gris hayatta kalırsa da aklanacaktır. Ayrıca eğer ki Carrouges kaybederse karısı ceza olarak bir kazığa bağlanarak yakılacaktır.

Onun liderliğinde ülkelerini işgal etmiş bulunan İngiliz ordusunu yenerek hürriyetlerine kavuşurlar. Kızın da dediği gibi kral, hür her ülkenin kralı olarak tacını giyer ve tahtına oturur. Ancak bütün bu yaptıklarının şeytanın işi olduğuna hüküm veren din adamlarının baskısı sonucu bu minik kız ölüme mahkum edilir ve yakılarak öldürülür.
