Yüz yıl önce Antonio Bay adlı ufak bir sahil kasabasının ilk sakinleri, bölgede bastıran sis nedeniyle zor durumdaki gemileri, sahte ışıklarla kayalıklara çekip, batan gemilerin kargolarını yağmalamaktaydılar. Bu sırada batırılan Elizabeth Dane adlı geminin kargosundaki altınlar da kasabanın inşasında kullanılmıştı. Ancak şimdi kasabanın kuruluşunun yüzüncü yıldönümünde, geminin mürettebatının hayaletleri, bastıran sisle beraber intikamlarını ve kendilerinden çalınan altınları almak için kasabaya dönmüşlerdi. Başrollerde "Çığlıklar Kraliçesi" Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau ve Janet Leigh gibi önemli oyuncuların yer aldığı, korkunun ustası John Carpenter'dan kült film haline gelmiş bir korku klasiği.

"Yükseklik Korkusu" gerilim filmlerinin, özellikle de Alfred Hitchcock'un 1958'de çektiği Ölüm Korkusu (Vertigo)'nun bir parodisidir. Sapık, Notorious ve Kuşlar başta olmak üzere Hitchcock'un diğer filmlerine de göndermeler yapılır. Bir bakıma "Yükseklik Korkusu" Mel Brooks'un Alfred Hitchcock'a bir saygı gösterisidir.
