Grandma Vera travels by bus from a small Polish town to Pinneberg to celebrate her birthday with granddaughter Linda, her husband Lothar and their two children Jan and Christina. Together with Lothar's stuffy, uptight parents, they spend a fun-filled evening. But the next morning, Grandma is dead. Although Grandma Vera actually wanted to lie next to Grandpa Pyotr in her hometown of Kovalov, the family cannot afford an expensive funeral. So there is only one option: to transport Grandma themselves.

Pastor Petersen is threatened with the loss of his parish and thus also his office: The parishes of the villages of Norderup and Toestrup are to merge, but the stuffy neighbors are bothered by the fact that Petersen and his girlfriend are living in a wild marriage. Petra, a hearty Westphalian, refuses to be blackmailed and offers the bourgeois from Norderup a performance they will never forget. Meanwhile, her friends from the Ruhr are also looking for and finding their little happiness.

Four teenage friends - Frank, Spüli, Mücke, and Pommes - try to have their first contact with the opposite gender. Not so easy in the Ruhr region of the 80s. Attempts at dancing and being in a band go wrong, and their parents and teachers can't help with that, so the four teens need to get creative.

Village pastor Hans-Uwe is worried about his brother Fiedje and his friends Heinrich and Knud in his small village of Toestrup in Schleswig-Holstein. The men have been alone for years and there are no suitable women in sight. But now there is hope, because he has persuaded the three of them to place a personal ad: "Looking for suitable wives for three loving men. Age and looks don't matter. Preferably animal lovers. Letters under box number ..."

Pensioner Gerda grabs burglar Simon (armed with a harpoon) and forces him to be her carer. Anything is better than the nursing home to which she was taken by her daughter Linda. When the daughter has to move in with her mother because her apartment has become a permanent building site, things really start to get "funny".

Kati leaves her hometown - a small provincetown in northwestern Germany - to live in the city of Hamburg. Being about 18 years old she has just finished school and seeks her freedom away from home. She knows she loves women but never dared to live accordingly. In Hamburg she soon finds a lover and a good friend, too, and the strength to face the narrow-minded people at home. After struggling with it for some time she returns for a visit to tell at least her mother and best friend.
