The story of a Russian family living and dying through four wars: the Russian Civil War in 1920, the Great Patriotic War in 1942, the First Chechen War in 1996, and the Russian military invasion in Ukraine in 2017.

August 1980. The Soviet authorities are preparing Moscow for the Olympic Games and expelling unreliable citizens from the city. One such citizen is the talented cellist Arseny Chaika, who ends up in the village of Protasovo with his rabbit. Meanwhile, in Moscow, foreign journalist William Smith is looking for him for an interview.

Realizing that something needs to change in life, a simple girl Sasha Gvozdikova leaves Yekaterinburg for Moscow, abandoning a boring job and a married lover. She writes short stories and dreams of getting them published, but overestimates her writing talent. Together with Sasha, two of her best friends from Yekaterinburg, Katya and Alyona, live in Moscow. The plot of the story revolves around three heroines who are trying to find themselves in metropolitan life and in relationships.
