Film, Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nda Rus Kraliyet Donanması’nda görevli Amiral iken Bolşevik Devrimi’nin ardından Beyaz Ordu’nun komutasına geçip Bolşevik’lere karşı savaşan Aleksandr Vasiliyevich Kolchak’ın duygusal ilişkisini konu edinirken aynı zamanda Rus Tarihi’ne farklı bir açıdan yaklaşıyor. Bolşevik Devrimi’ni ve Komünist Yönetimi yanlı bir şekilde eleştirdiği iddia edilen film, vatan haini olarak addedilen Amiral Kolchak’ı kahraman olarak gösteriyor olması sebebiyle tepkilere yol açtı. Özellikle Rus Tarihçiler tarafından eleştirilmesinin yanında afişleri kimliği belirsiz kişilerce tahrip edildi. 9 Ekim 2008 tarihinde Rusya'da gösterime giren, altı milyondan fazla kişi tarafından izlenen film eleştirilerin yanında oyuncuların performanslarıyla beğeni topladı.
