Detective Kurt Wallander solves gruesome complex crimes in the city of Ystad, Sweden.

The series is named after a small part of Saltsjöbaden called Solsidan. It revolves around Alex and Anna who are expecting their first child and have just moved to Alex's childhood home in Saltsjöbaden, Stockholm County. Alex tries to get Anna to enjoy herself, and at the same time spend time with his childhood friend Fredde.

The focus is on the Gotland investigation team led by Inspector Robert Anders, who originally comes from Germany, his assistants Karin Jacobson and Thomas Wittberg, and the pathologist Ewa, played by Pippi Longstocking actress Inger Nilsson.

The series partly follows Ausonius during the execution of the crime, and partly the police's detective work. The series also provides an insight into Ausonius' earlier life, from high school age onwards.
