Kendisini yıllar içinde fiziksel bakımdan iyiden iyiye çökerten bipolar bozuklukla boğuşan, eski yerel satranç şampiyonu Genesis Potini (!f 2004’te gösterilen Balinanın Sırtında ile hatırladığımız Cliff Curtis), kardeşi Ariki’nin denetiminde psikiyatri kliniğinden salıverilmiştir. Suçla ve çetelerle haşır neşir Ariki ve oğlu Mana’nın yaşadığı evden uzaklaşıp, gerçek hayata geri dönmek isteyen Gen bir gün kendisine benzer sorunlu geçmişleri olan çocukların bulunduğu bir satranç kulübünün varlığından haberdar olur. Bir anda bu birbiriyle uyumsuz görünen gruptan etkilenen Gen, onları Ulusal Satranç Şampiyonası’na hazırlamaya karar verir. James Napier Robertson, gerçek bir olaydan esinlenerek yazdığı senaryosuyla, duygu sömürüsüne açık bu çetrefilli konuyu kolaya kaçmadan kotarıyor. Kayıp Şampiyon, yaşanılan güçlüklere rağmen devam etme isteğinin, ayağa kalkmanın samimi ve gerçekçi detaylarla dolu anlatımı aslında.
