Film4.2KomediThe delightful Johann Strauss comic opera Die Fledermaus was mercilessly lampooned in this truly bizarre production. For starters, a framing device has been added: After appearing in 300 consecutive appearances of Fledermaus (which translates as The Bat) the lead tenor (Georg Alexander) imagines that he's seeing bats everywhere. Driven a bit over the edge by all this, he falls asleep and has a nightmare about the opera, with a group of non-singers cast in the leading roles. The original libretto about romantic assignations, political imprisonments and mistaken identity is burlesqued to the hilt: at one point, the hero finds out that his prison cell is surrounded by rubber tubes!

Jordan, a famous criminal lawyer, will only represent clients, of whose innocence he is convinced (must be financially not-too-well-off). One day, his future son-in-law, the jeweler Fabian, is arrested on suspicion of murder on the day before his wedding. He is said to have murdered his ex-wife, the dancer Ria Norady. The conductor Gillmore found her dead in her dressing room shortly after a visit from Fabian. Gisela Jordan asks her father to defend him. After speaking to Fabian, the lawyer is convinced he's innocent. But since there is no proof of this, he decides to go and try and find the real murderer himself.

Dance star Maria Arni is in love with Achim, the ballet répétiteur at the Municipal Opera. He, however, only has eyes for shy Else, a new girl at Maria's dance school. The girls are to accompany Maria on her new tour. The day before it begins, Else meets the English diplomat Bentley at a party. He courts her and nicknames her Daphne. Daphne believes she has found the man of her dreams. But then Bentley stops contacting her and eventually leaves. When Maria falls and injures herself during a performance in Geneva, Daphne steps in for her. In the audience, she sees Bentley and Achim sitting together. She then realizes that only Achim, who truly loves her, deserves her love.
