Dünya Savaşı yıllarından başlayıp, Kralcılar ve Komünistler arasında geçen yıkıcı Yunan İç Savaşı'nı da içine alan süreyi kapsar. Brechtvari bir anlatım tarzıyla filmde zaman bir ileri bir geri sıçrar durur.
