Eski bir yazar olan, bohem bir hayat tarzına sahip olan Marcel Marx, Fransa'nın liman şehri Le Havre'de yaşamakta, kentte ayakkabı boyacısı olarak mütevazi bir hayat sürüp gitmektedir. Başarılı bir edebiyatçı olma hayallerinden vazgeçerek işi, karısı Arletty ve akşamları demlendiği bar arasında gidip gelen Marcel'in çizdiği bu sade hayat, yasa dışı yollarla kente gelen Afrikalı bir göçmenin hayatına girmesi ile alt üst olur. Eşi Arletty ise bu arada ciddi bir hastalığa yakalanır. Marcel'ın kılıçlarını yeniden kuşanma vakti gelmiştir...
