When Hana Sikorova, mayor of a northern Bohemian village, stands up to a large coal mining concern that offers villagers large compensation in exchange for abandoning their houses built on land containing brown coal deposits, her fourteen year old daughter Misha disappears. The search for her daughter makes Hana suspicious of the whole community, after years of peaceful coexistence. Under the pressure of unfolding events, the community starts to fall apart and show its true face. Solving the mystery divides the story into several interweaving narratives that ultimately connect in unexpected ways.

Bütün bu streslerinin yanında karısıyla birlikte evlat edinecekleri bebeğin heyecanını da yaşamaktadır. Bir gün arabasıyla Arap asıllı genç bir adama çarpar. Suçludur, ama yardım etmeden kaza yerinden kaçar. Fakat kaçarken çarptığı adamın çantasını alır. Çarptığı adamın elinde Irak"la ilgili, Danimarka hükümetini sarsacak sırlar vardır. Bir televizyon kanalında çalışan kız kardeşinden yardım isteyen Falk, kendini bir anda büyük bir siyasi komplonun içinde bulur.

Mária, a retired teacher, one fine day decides she no longer wants to feel like a cow, and when not even the mayor helps her against the arrogant source of local evil, she obtains a gun and resolves to do what most of us occasionally think of but immediately banish from our minds. Very soon, however, she discovers that just as murder is morally complex, it is equally complex logistically, despite her former pupil, now on probation, offering her this priceless life advice: “Crime only looks simple, Mrs. Teacher, but then something always goes to shit.”

Overwhelmed by a world he can no longer control, a quarrelsome worker in his fifties tries to preserve the integrity of his neighbourhood...

A serial killer murders wealthy businessmen. He lures them to his sprawling estate under the pretext of selling it. However, one of the murders does not fit into this series, even though it is similar to the others to a certain extent. The widow of businessman Sojková is also a suspect, but she is also acting as an amateur detective. She searches for her husband's killer on her own, as she believes the incompetent police are unable to catch him.
