A mysterious serial killer is shocking the underworld. Scotland Yard is investigating the case. Clues lead the detectives to Blackwhite Castle.

A young woman makes a living as a disc jockey in Berlin without having a permanent home or real friends. She accidentally discovers that her mother has died and sets out on a search for clues, which also leads her to her penniless father.

18-year-old school boy Helmut falls in love with fellow pupil Britta. He starts working for a Peace movement to get to know Britta. Britta, however, suddenly moves to San Francisco to live with her father and whilst there, finds a new boyfriend. Helmut studies, literature and politics in his home town and have a relationship with another girl from his former school, now studying medicine at the same university but they break up after having an affair with her roommate. Helmut begins a lot of short affairs with different women but still searches for his first girl.

In the Rhineland in the 1960s, Hans Gunter, a rather shy young man in his mid-twenties, is one of the top players in the country at Tipp-Kick— a tabletop soccer game. When one of the metal figure players accidentally falls into a bath of photo-chemicals, it comes to life as a blond young football star, creating havoc in the life of its owner.

A department store security guard is secretly in love with a clerk in the store's bookshop. When he witnesses a seeming rival being attacked in the train, he gets off instead of helping him. Not being able to deal with his bad conscience, his formerly controlled life breaks down.

The evil spirit Lumpazivagabundus says of Fortuna, the goddess of fate: "My true followers don't care much for her. If luck comes their way once, they throw it out the window, and if it comes again, they trample it underfoot." Fortuna isn't about to take this lying down. She intends to prove the opposite through three mortals: the tailor Zwirn, the carpenter Leim, and the shoemaker Knieriem. They win 100,000 thalers in the lottery. And now Fortuna's bet stands.
