Amerikan tarihinin en önemli insan hakları savunucularından ve siyahi liderlerinden biri olan Malcolm X’in hayatı, Spike Lee’nin yaratıcı bakış açısı ile beyazperdeye aktarılıyor. Daha önce Broadway’de tarihi lideri canlandırmış olan Denzel Washington’un dikkate değer oyunculuğu ile Malcolm X’in hikayesi sıradan bir biyografi olmaktan çok, bir insanın hayatında devrim yapıp kendini gerçekleştirmesi şeklinde, dönemlere bölünerek anlatılmış:Babası Ku Klux Klan tarafından öldürülen Malcolm, çağdaşı bir çok zenci gibi umutsuz ve zor bir çocukluk geçirir. Neticesinde hayatı günlük yaşayan hedonist bir hırsıza dönüşür. Sonunda hapise girdiğinde İslam öğretisi kendisini yeniden tanımlamasına yardımcı olur. Burada dahil olduğu toplulukta kendini bulur ve yükselmeye başlar. Hapisten çıkınca Malcolm, adeta bir mesih işlevi yüklenir ve kendilerini birer suçlu yapan toplumsal adaletsizliğe başkaldırır.
