Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda ve Michael Douglas, nükleer enerji kullanımının tehlikelerine ve televizyon haberlerinin gücüne dikkat çeken bu gerilim filminin başrollerinde. Alternatif enerji kaynakları hakkında raporlar hazırlayan gazeteci Kimberly Wells (Jane Fonda), nükleer santralde bir kazaya tanık oluyor. Kazayı halka bildirmek isteyen Wells, kendini komploların içinde bulunca, kazayı istemeyerek de olsa gizli tutmak zorunda kalıyor. 1979 yılının en çok tartışılan filmlerinden biri olan The China Syndrome, ününü bir ölçüde filmin gösterime girmesinden tam on iki gün sonra gerçekleşen Three Mile Island nükleer felaketine borçlu.
