Pek de uzak olmayan gelecekte, insan ve robotlar arasındaki bilinç yarışında, robotların bir adım öne geçtiği bir zamandayız. Öyle ki artık yapay zekanın, kendi kurallarını da yaratmaya başladığı bu zaman diliminde, robotlar da kendi türlerini kontrol altında tutmayı amaçlamaktadırlar. Diğer robotların uyması gereken prensipleri ortaya atan da yine bir robottur ve emsallerinin aksine; insanoğlunun asla ulaşamadığı bilgelik seviyesine adım atmalarına çok az kalmıştır.

Alman ordusunun bombardımanı altında kalan Belgrad’da komünist Marko’nun hedeflediği ortam fazlasıyla sağlanmıştır. Zekasını sinsiliğiyle birleştiren Marko, arkadaşı Blacky ve yoldaşlarını yeraltında bulunan bir mahzene silah üretmek için yerleştirir.Marko’nun söylediklerine göre savaş bitince herkes dışarıya çıkacak ve bir yeryüzü cennetiyle karşılaşacaktır. Zaman geçip de kaos sona erip barış ilan edildiğinde yer üstünde çok şey değişir. Ama yeraltında her şey aynı şekilde devam eder. Marko yeraltındakilere faşist yönetimin tüm acımasızlığıyla hükmünü sürdürdüğünü belirterek, yeraltında silah üreten yoldaşlarına yaşamın tüm karanlığıyla devam ettiğine inandırır.

A tragicomedy on displaced people in the post-Communist era. Its protagonist are mostly oldtimers from the circus world and the variety stage. When the circus burns down and the "last performance" ends in tragedy, the fault for the loss is laid upon corrupt officials and smalltime gangsters. Veteran screen star Meri Boshkova - who played the title role in the first Macedonian feature film made, Frosina (1952) - can be seen in the role of Mimi, a woman at the dumpyard who lives with her dreams.

Black marketeers Marko and Blacky manufacture and sell weapons to the Communist resistance in WWII Belgrade, living the good life along the way. Marko's surreal duplicity propels him up the ranks of the Communist Party, and he eventually abandons Blacky and steals his girlfriend. After a lengthy stay in a below-ground shelter, the couple reemerges during the Yugoslavian Civil War of the 1990s as Marko sees the opportunity to exploit the situation. An extended television version of Emir Kusturica's Palme d'Or winning Underground.
