Bu esnada Gustave'ın yaşlı sevgilisi Madame D. esrarengiz bir şekilde hayata veda eder, ikili Madame D. adlı kadına veda etmek için yola çıkar. Bir asilzade olan Madame D. adlı kadının şatosuna vardıklarında miras paylaşırken denk gelirler. Madame D., Gustave'a miras olarak paha biçilmez bir rönesans tablosu bırakmıştır ve bunun açıklanmasıyla aile içerisinde büyük bir karmaşa çıkar. Götz George, one of Germany's best-known actors, is at the center of this homage, which is also a reappraisal of the contradictions in his father's life. As the only follower from the acting profession, Heinrich George had to pay with his life. He was not officially rehabilitated until 1998.
