Gerçek bir olaydan uyarlanan filmde, 1973 yılında Roma’da 16 yaşındaki John Paul Getty’nin (Charlie Plummer) kaçırılması ile başlayan olaylar, anne Gail Harris’in (Michelle Williams) oğlunun multimilyoner büyükbabasından fidye parasını istemesi ve büyükbaba Getty’nin (Christopher Plummer) bunu reddetmesi ile gelişir.
