Törene katılan erkekler, rahip tarafından suya atılan haçı çıkarmak için birbirleri ile yarışır. Haçı bulmayı başaran kişinin ise bir yıl boyunca kutsandığına, revah ve servete kavuşacağına inanılmaktadır. 31 yaşındaki tarih uzmanı Petrunija, başarısız bir iş görüşmesinden dönerken Epifani törenine denk gelir. Törene katılan genç kadın, kendisini bir anda suyun içine atılan haçı çıkarırken bulur. Haçı yakalamayı başaran Petrunija, sudan çıkınca etrafındaki erkeklerin saldırısına uğrar. Erkekler, Petrunija’nın kadın olduğu için ritüele katılmaya hakkı olmadığını, bu yüzden haçı geri vermesi gerektiğini düşünür. Ancak, Petrunija’nın haçı geri vermeye niyeti yoktur.
