Film 1865 yılında Güney eyaletlerinden Louisiana'da, Amerikan İç Savaşı'nın son günlerinde geçer. John McBurney (Clint Eastwood) adında ağır yaralı bir Kuzeyli onbaşı, Güneylilere ait bu topraklarda ormanlık bir arazide tam da düşman birliklerinin eline geçmek üzereyken Amy (Pamelyn Ferdin) adlı 12 yaşlarında bir kız çocuğu tarafından kurtarılır.
