Sovyetler Birliği’ndeki müzelerden alınan eşyaların kullanıldığı film, gerçeğe son derece yakındır. "Savaş ve Barış", aynı adlı romandaki duyguları ve atmosferi de başarıyla sinema diline aktarır. "Edebiyatla sinemanın kusursuz evliliği" olarak nitelendirilen filmin çekimleri tam yedi yıl sürmüş, yapımda binlerce oyuncu rol almış ve dönemin koşullarında 100 milyon dolara mal olmuştur.
