Fotoğrafçı L. B. “Jeff” Jeffries, geçirdiği kaza sonucunda bacağını kırar. Joe Gillis (William Holden) genç bir senaristtir. Film, Gills’in bir havuzda kanlar içinde yatarken görüntüsü ile başlar ve daha sonra altı ay öncesine gideriz.
