Caroline, Danimarka’ya gittiğinde ülkede baskıcı bir rejimin hüküm sürdüğünü ve soylu rahiplerin yönetimi ele geçirdiğini fark eder. Öte yandan hafiften çılgın olan kralla başlarda anlaşamayan Caroline, kralın Avrupa seyahati sırasında tanıştığı ve saraya getirdiği doktor olan Johann Struensee’yle (Mads Mikkelsen) büyük ve yasak bir aşk yaşamaya başlar.
