The hero of the film, slightly satiated with life, and therefore suffering from its hopeless grayness, was made an extraordinary offer and, what's more, a very lucrative one: a job in bed. Alexander Maximov is a brilliant psychologist and the best negotiator in Russia. But even an ideal, it would seem, employee makes mistakes. In the past, while negotiating with the terrorists who had taken over the school, Maximov suffers a defeat when his daughter is killed. Unable to look his wife and son in the eyes, Alexander leaves the family. Years later the hero again faces the perpetrator of that tragedy - it turns out that during an explosion at that school the intruder did not die and now throws Maksimov a new challenge.

The film tells about the events of 1944 and about one operation of SMERSH, the special department of Soviet counterintelligence. The command suspects that an enemy is working in the liberated territory, who must get documents compromising the Soviet government (we are talking about secret negotiations with the Germans), left somewhere in the dungeon of Hitler's former headquarters.
