Yarışmada aylardır birinci olan yoksul yahudi Harbie Stempel aylarca halkın hayranlığını kazansa da NBC kanalının yöneticileri bu yarışmacı profilini değiştirmeye karar verir. Yeni gözdeleri ise saygın bir Amerikan ailesine mensup olan Charles Van Doren isimli yarışmacıdır. Stempel ve Doren artık karşı karşıyadır. Ancak hesapta bir terslik vardır!
