Jacob, bir hahamdır ve uzun yıllar sonra Fransa'ya dönmeye hazırlanır. Amerika'da yaşadığı süre boyunca çok sevilmiştir. Ancak bir gün, Schmolls ailesi onu bir kutlama için davet eder. Kıyafetlerini ve sakallarını çalarlar. İşte bu kimlik değiştirme, son derece eğlenceli ve bol kahkahalı olayların başlangıcı olacaktır.

Pierre ömrünün en zor gecesini yaşayacaktır.

Sahnelerde hep ters ilişki var, burada asıl özgürlük bir hayalet gibi (komünist manifestonun giriş bölümünde böyle bir hayalet benzetmesi yapılmakta) küçük burjuva ve konfor arayışındaki insanların arasında sadece geziniyor.

Caught by tabloid paparazzi with his mistress Elena, a famous and beautiful fashion model, billionaire Pierre Levasseur tries to avoid a divorce by inventing a preposterous lie.
