Dünya prömiyerini 72. Cannes Film Festivali’nin Belirli Bir Bakış bölümünde yapan Papicha, izleyicileri 1997 yılının Cezayir’ine götürüyor. Ülke, erkek egemen düzenin hakim olduğu bir İslam devleti kurmak isteyen teröristlerin elindedir. Bu teröristlerin zorbalıklarından en çok etkilenenlerin başında ise yaşamları, giyinme tarzları, bedenleri kontrol altında tutulan kadınlardır. Başı açık gezen kadınların bile cezalandırıldığı bu dönemde, genç bir moda tasarım öğrencisi olan Nedima, kampüsteki arkadaşlarını bir defile düzenlemeye ve tüm yasakları delmeye ikna eder. Papicha, daha önce belgesel filmlere imza atan Mounia Meddour’un ilk uzun metraj kurmaca filmi.

Tüm ruhuyla bir kominist olan Fernand ve Fransa’da yaşamak için komünistlerden kaçan Hélène imkansız gibi görünse de birbirlerine aşık olurlar. Hélène ve ergenlik çağındaki oğlu Jean-Claude Cezayir'de Fernand'ın yanında yaşamaya başlarlar. Fransız sömürge yönetimi altındaki Cezayir'de doğmuş bir Fransız soyundan gelen Fernand, Cezayir halkının nasıl sömürüldüğünü ve ezildiğini görünce Cezayir Komünist Partisi'ne katıır. Cezayir Bağımsızlık Savaşı derinleştikçe ve Fernand silahlı direniş taktikleriyle Ulusal Kurtuluş Cephesi'ne katılınca, evlilikleri ağır bir baskı altına girer. Fernand, torna operatörü olarak çalıştığı fabrikaya bomba yerleştimek suçundan tutuklanınca, Hélène, onu kurtarmak için elinden geleni yapar.

Algeria, 1994. S. and Lotfi, two friends from childhood, travel through the desert looking for Abou Leila, a dangerous terrorist on the run. Their quest seems absurd, given that the Sahara has not been affected by the wave of attacks. Lofti has only one priority : to keep S. as far from the capital as possible, knowing his friend is too fragile to face more bloodshed. But the closest they get into the desert, the more they will be confronted with their own violence.

During a beach excursion, Nfissa, a young mother, is violently sexually harassed and drowned by a group of young men after she absent-mindedly swims into their midst. Nobody seems to witness her disappearance. Anxiety and fear grow among her family, especially as, on the same beach, bathers suddenly start dying en masse.

A scientific expedition is set to take off in six days and Zouzou still hasn’t said anything to her family. As she waits for her visa to be approved, her mum harangs her about being single and fusses over her sister’s wedding preparations. Zouzou’s secret worries her best friend Warda, who advises her to see a hairdresser.
