Cezayir Bağımsızlık Savaşı derinleştikçe ve Fernand silahlı direniş taktikleriyle Ulusal Kurtuluş Cephesi'ne katılınca, evlilikleri ağır bir baskı altına girer. Fernand, torna operatörü olarak çalıştığı fabrikaya bomba yerleştimek suçundan tutuklanınca, Hélène, onu kurtarmak için elinden geleni yapar.
