Konusu yönetmenin doğduğu yer olan Rimini'de geçen (ama film orada çevrilmemiştir) "Aylaklar", Adriyatik Denizi kıyısındaki kasabalarında günlerini tembellik ederek geçiren işsiz güçsüz takımından beş gencin öyküsünü anlatır. Taşranın dışına bile çıkmamış bu gençler yeterince olgunlaştıklarını sanarak kendilerinin önemli kişiler olarak görmektedirler, ancak zamanla sadece kendilerini kandırmış olduklarını anlayacaklardır. Zaten filmin özgün adı olan "I Vitelloni" fazla irileşmiş, büyümüş ancak halâ verim alınamayan dana anlamına gelmektedir ve bu filmden sonra İtalyanca argosuna girmiş bir kelimedir. Filmdeki gençlerin de, aslında yaşları hayli ilerlemiş olmasına rağmen ortada henüz ürettikleri bir şey yoktur.
