  Saroo Brierley’in kendi hayat hikayesini yazdığı “A Long Way Home” isimli kitabından uyarlanan filmde, 5 yaşında Hintli bir çocuk olan Saroo ağabeyinin geri dönmesini beklerken bir tren vagonunda uyuyakalır. O uyurken trenin yola çıkması sonucu küçük Saroo uyandığında kendini evinden kilometrelerce uzakta bulur. Artık kayıptır ve eve nasıl döneceğine dair bir fikri yoktur. Kendini Calcutta'da bulan Saroo büyük mücadelelerden sonra Avustralyalı bir çift tarafından evlat edinilir ve sevgiyle büyür. Ancak ailesini bulma isteği giderek bir saplantıya dönüşür. Elinde hiçbir şey olmadan ilerlemeye çalışan genç adamın içindeki çaresizlik zamanla hayatını da etkilemeye başlar.
