  Lambert, a young man out to make his fortune, is out west trying to sell a gadget that can peel potatoes, open cans, pull out nails and perform other handy tasks. He comes to a cattle ranch and runs into a group of cowboys eating supper. He impresses the cowboys so much that they make him their leader, and it's not long before he's hired by pretty young ranch manager Vesta Philbrook as her aide and bodyguard. "The Duke", as he's now called, falls in love with her and sets out to help her get rid of a gang of vicious cattle rustlers that are constantly raiding her ranch.

Ben rejoins Brent's gang, but he is soon exposed as a fraud by Marlin.

After a series of misadventures, Fenwick falls in love with Corinne, whose parents, scandalized by their daughter's escapades, disown her. Reporting to her employers that Fenwick has proposed to her, Corinne discovers that the young man is not a millionaire, but rather the object of a publicity stunt, which is aborted when Corinne and Fenwick really do get married. Fenwick then approaches Corinne's parents and persuades them to forgive their daughter for her scandalous behavior.

The Holdens keep Jackie, but he eventually goes to the city when the elderly couple lose their farm and retire to the poorhouse. Jackie next is befriended by Cesare Gallo, a sidewalk musician who was also the teacher of Paul Savelli--now a famous violinist. A chance meeting with Savelli by Jackie reunites him with Gallo just before the old man dies. Savelli takes Jackie home with him, happily discovers the boy to be his son, and restores the farm to the Holdens.

Also friends of Douglas Bruce are the James Minturns, a wealthy young couple whose marriage breaks up over Nellie Minturn's neglect of their children for a society life. Nellie eventually realizes her error, devotes herself to hospital work, and is reunited with James while bird-calling in the woods.

The child is put to bed and is laboring with the Lord's prayer when he sticks at "kingdom come." The cowboy goes into the saloon and asks if anyone there knows what comes after "kingdom come." He is greeted with much laughter and no information. A dancer who turns out to be the mother of the child, which has been living with its grandfather, repeats the words of the prayer, and the child goes to sleep in peace. A romance between the cowboy and the dancer develops.
