Oscar ödüllü bu başyapıtta, Rusya’da 1805’de başlayan olaylar dizisi, beş aristokrat ailenin öyküsü etrafında anlatılır ve 1812’de Napolyon’un Rusya’yı işgaliyle zirve yapar. Tolstoy’un dört ciltlik bu dev eserindeki tarihi detayların inanılmaz bir özenle aktarıldığı filmde, 45 dakikalık savaş sahneleri o kadar gerçekçidir ki çekimlerde 120.000 kişilik bir ordu oluşturulmuş ve pek çok at öldürülmüştür. Sovyetler Birliği’ndeki müzelerden alınan eşyaların kullanıldığı film, gerçeğe son derece yakındır. "Savaş ve Barış", aynı adlı romandaki duyguları ve atmosferi de başarıyla sinema diline aktarır. "Edebiyatla sinemanın kusursuz evliliği" olarak nitelendirilen filmin çekimleri tam yedi yıl sürmüş, yapımda binlerce oyuncu rol almış ve dönemin koşullarında 100 milyon dolara mal olmuştur.

He went into retirement and wrote "The Science of Victory," containing maxims such as "Swiftness of movement accompanies victory," and "the real general is he who defeats the enemy before reaching him." The czar recalled Suvorov to become the leader of the joint armies of Russia and Austria against Napoleon.

Malyshev,deputy chief of Criminal Investigation Department, a Komsomol member, wins over to the Soviet power a former field-hand and now a bandit Lazar Baukin, and the latter tells him about Vorontsov, the gang leader. Malyshev guarantees Baukin’s freedom. However the chief arrests him in order to reap laurels of catching the gang leader. Malyshev is in despair - he has brought under execution the man who has fully trusted him. The situation gets worse due to his personal drama and Malyshev commits suicide.
