Eric Rohmer’in ‘Ahlak Üzerine Altı Öykü’ (Six Moral Tales) serisinden ilham alan genç yönetmen Puiu, benzer bir şekilde Bay Lazarescu’nun Ölümü’nü Bükreş banliyölerinde geçen altı filmden oluşacak bir serinin ilk filmi olarak kurgulamış. Bay Lazarescu Bükreş’te bir apartman dairesinde tek başına, üç kedisiyle yaşayan 60’lı yaşlarında bir alkoliktir. Bir gece mide krampları ve bulantısıyla uyanınca acil servisi çağırır ve beklemeye başlar. Ambulans nihayet geldiğinde, Lazarescu’nun büyük şehir tıp dünyasındaki karanlık yolculuğu başlar; bir hastaneden diğerine sürüklenir, yanlış teşhis konur, tekrar teşhis konur, beklemeye alınır ve saatler ilerledikçe durumu kötüleşir. Neredeyse bir belgesel lezzetinde gerçekçi olan film, yönetmenin kendi tabiriyle televizyon dizisi ER ile Rohmer’i buluşturuyor ve bolca kara mizah da içeriyor. Film, eleştirmenlerce bir başyapıt olarak nitelendiriliyor; Bükreş dünyanın herhangi bir şehri, Bay Lazarescu ise pekala yan komşunuz olabilir.

On a rainy day, two guys arrive in a small village with film and a projector in their car. No one from the village comes to meet them. What happened? Who are they?
