Otto Wels

Otto Wels (15 septembre 1873, Berlin - 16 septembre 1939, Paris) est un homme politique allemand. Député du SPD de 1912 à 1933, il en fut le président de 1919 à 1939. Il fut le seul orateur à s'opposer, malgré les menaces, à l'adoption de la loi des pleins pouvoirs voulue par les nazis, lors de la séance du Reichstag du 23 mars 1933. Il fut déclaré apatride trois mois après la dissolution du SPD par les nazis en juin 1933. Il s'exila dans le territoire du Bassin de la Sarre, qui était alors géré par la Société des Nations. Il tenta ensuite de reconstruire un SPD en exil, d'abord à Prague puis à Paris, où il décéda en 1939.
