Arima Kousei won numerous piano competitions while under the strict watch of his mother. He was known as the human metronome during that time. That suspect was previously arrested for another girl's murder, but he was released due to a lack of evidence. Detective Shunpei Kusanagi investigated the prior murder case. The same suspect was then released due to a lack of evidence for the most recent murder case. The released man returned to his town, where everybody hated him. On the day of the autumn festival parade, the man was killed. Physicist Manabu Yukawa, Detective Kaoru Utsumi and Detective Shunpei Kusanagi work together on his case.

Director Mitsutoshi Tanaka's adaptation of Kenichi Yamamoto's award-winning novel of the same name received the Best Artistic Contribution Award at the 37th Montréal World Film Festival, the Best Director Award at the 2014 Osaka Cinema Festival, the 30th Fumiko Yamaji Cultural Award and the 37th Japan Academy Film Prize in nine categories, including Best Art Direction, Excellent Film and Excellent Actor.

The drama stars Beat Takeshi as General Hideki Tojo, who served as Prime Minister of Japan during World War II and was later executed as a war criminal. The story's theme is said to be a look at how the Pacific War began, focusing mostly on the three month period between the Imperial Conference (Gozen Kaigi) on September 6, 1941, and the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Ayumu Miyamoto (Yosuke Sugino) is a young orthopedic surgeon. He goes back to his hometown in Nagano Prefecture and begins to work at the general hospital there. In addition to working as an orthopedic surgeon, he is ordered to join the mountain medical treatment team. The team provides treatment for patients who became sick or injured while in the mountains. The medical team members need to have knowledge about both the mountain and medicine. They are called mountain doctors because of this. Ayumu Miyamoto is not passionate about his duties on the mountain medical team. Things change as he works more with the team members. Meanwhile, Gakuto Emori (Nao Omori) is a circulatory physician who works at the same hospital and is a member of the medical treatment team. Although Gakuto Emori does his job well, he has trauma from his past that he tries to overcome.

Tobita Tasuku's father, Jinpei left a letter and disappeared on the day of Tasuku's high school graduation. Tasuku decides to visit the Joker Detective Agency to find his father but the cost of investigation is too high. Tasuku later finds out that the tuition fees for attending the detective school is much cheaper than the cost of investigation. Seeing that he can get a job in a detective agency and find his father, Tasuku decides to enroll into the Joker Detective School and be a full-fledged detective.

Tetsuro Yamasaki returns to his hometown to find that it is in financial crisis. He quits his job and settles in his hometown to help the town get out of this crisis.

Kiwako Nonomiya is devastated after Takehiro Akiyama, the married man she has been having an affair with, manipulates her into getting an abortion by promising to marry her and then refusing to divorce his wife. Kiwako then learns of Takehiro's wife's pregnancy. One morning, while Takehiro and his wife Etsuko are away, Kiwako sneaks into their home to get a look at their six-month-old child. Without a thought for the consequences, she carries the baby away. Kiwako then raises the child as her own, while being a fugitive from the law.
