Siyah beyaz bir gerilim klasiği. Yıllar önce öldürülen teyzesinin uğursuz evine geri dönen bir kadının, kendisinden bir şeyler saklayan kocasının garip davranışları neticesinde deliliğin sınırına geldiği bu atmosferik gerilim, tahmin edeceğiniz gibi başroldeki Ingrid Bergman‘a En İyi Kadın Oyuncu Oscar’ını getiriyor. Evin siyah-beyaz atmosferinin başarısı nedeniyle film En İyi Sanat Yönetimi (Siyah-Beyaz filmde) Oscar’ını alıyor.

Myra, kendisiyle birlikteyken sokağa çıkma yasağını ihlâl etmiş ve Bale Grubundan kovulmuştur. Londra sokaklarında hayatını sürdürmeye çalışırken, âşığının savaşta öldüğü haberi daha da batağa saplanmasına neden olur. Ama haber asılsızdır. Roy kendisini bulup taşradaki aile evine götürdüğünde, Myra geçirdiği korkunç yılların kötü bir rüya olarak kalacağını ummaktadır.
