This film is one of the most popular pictures of Slovak cinema and relates the story about the legendary folk hero and brigand Juro Jánošík [1688-1713] and the social situation in Slovakia of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The first part talks about Jánošík's childhood, studies and return to his native village. In the second part Jánošík leaves for the hills, where he organizes his band of brigands and starts an anti-feudal resistance. The film concludes with Jánošík's execution.

This feature film based on the events of 1938 is a chronicle of the futile efforts of the Czechoslovak president Edvard Benes (Jirí Pleskot), politicians and ordinary citizens, to save the independence and the territorial integrity of the state from the advance of Hitler's Germany. On the 29th of March 1938 the leader of the Sudeten Germans Henlein (Werner Ehrlicher) has a meeting with Hitler (Gunnar Möller). Hitler orders him to intensify pressure on the Czechoslovak government. On the 24th of April in Carlsbad, the Sudetendeutsche Partei (Sudeten German Party) decides upon eight demands that are unacceptable to the Czechoslovak President, since they would ultimately lead to the break-up of the Republic. Benes still shows a certain willingness to negotiate, and Henlein resents this. The Germans are determined to make further negotiations impossible through incidents and violence.

A fisherman saves Anada, a woman adrift, from drowning. He takes her to his home, and protects her. Eventually, she occupies a larger place than was to be expected. He commits adultery with her, but his own wife seems to be in love with the strange young woman.

He does not understand much of what is happening around him. A group of drivers paid according to their performance are struggling with hard work in a large quarry, somewhere where foxes say good night. A new worker, Marek Orban, joins the team of foreman Peter Hotka, known as Maco. Deep down, he is a deeply moral person, although he was given a suspended sentence for bodily harm. He beat up his wife's lover, to whom he must also pay compensation. Marek hides this from the other members of the group because he is ashamed. Maco, out of friendship with Marko, attributes non-existent trucks to the group, which, of course, backfires. However, the team eventually shows its strength and works off the undeserved reward.

The myth of the anti-fascist resistance in Slovakia was one of the important themes of normalization cinema, of course, treated with an emphasis on the leading role of the communists. This primitively illustrative film depicts the heroic enthusiasm shown by the members of the resistance group, heroically and with constant commitment of life fighting against the treacherous police of the Slovak state and ultimately against the German Gestapo.

The film is inspired by the life of the Goral population in the Orava region, a life connected with the beautiful but harsh nature, rich in emotional expressions of folk culture. Against this backdrop unfolds the story of a young musician's unfulfilled love for an enchantingly beautiful girl.
