Dünya Ağır Sıklet şampiyonu Apollo Creed’in Philadelphia’da yapacağı unvan maçında ki rakibi maç gününe beş hafta kala sakatlanır. Creed kendisine rakip olarak Philadelphia’da yaşayan adı duyulmamış, yoksul ve kimsesiz bir boksör olan “İtalyan Aygırı” Rocky Balboa’yı seçer. Rocky yerel bir mafya babası için borç tahsildarı olarak çalışmakta ve boksör olarak adını duyurmaya çalışmaktadır. Rocky artık yılın en önemli maçının aktörlerinden biridir.
