A man wanders around the mountains with a bleeding leg, holding a rifle in his hand. Seemingly a fugitive, he runs from as-yet unknown pursuers, but he also seems to be following somebody who has already walked the same path. As he hides in a secluded cave, past memories sweep through his exhausted mind, memories of lifelong cowardice and evasion. And this recollection leads to a reconstruction of early 20th century Korean history. As Mi-Ran, who loved Hyeong-Jin before and now is divorced her husband, returns from America, the love between Hyeong-Jin and Kyu-Ae breaks. When Kyu-Ae knows Kyu-Hee loves Hyeong-Jin, she becomes almost mad. Kyu-Hee decides to marry a factory worker Young-Kil to keep Kyu-Ae and Hyeong-Jin's relationship good. But Kyu-Ae asks him a divorce, asking him to marry Kyu-Hee. After he decides to divorce, Kyu-Ae kills herself. As the result, Kyu-Hee leaves him.

A woman attempts to seduce a rich man so she can convince him to help him pay for her dying sister's hospital bill.

There is a poor farmer couple. The landowner, an old man, covetous of the tenant's wife, tries to seduce her and sometimes threatens her. The wife spends every night with the old man at the water mill. Her husband, hearing the news, runs to the water mill and witnesses them together. He picks up the sickle that was placed near and kills his wife. The landowner escapes and the farmer gets arrested by a Japanese policeman.

Natasha, an officer at the Soviet Embassy in North Korea, is in love with Seok-bong. But Seok-bong has already planned his wedding with Bok-hui. Natasha grows jealous and threatens Bok-hui to leave somewhere else. Meanwhile Bok-hui's brother, Tae-yeong, is executed after participating in an anti-communist march. Seok-bong is accused of taking a part in the march. Seok-bong starts to feel pessimistic about his communist belief. He tries an escape to the South, but he is captured by the authority and executed.
