Dokuz buçuk yaşındaki Antoine ceza olarak aldığı ödevi yapamaz ve ertesi gün okula gitmekten korkar. Arkadaşı René ile birlikte okulu kırıp haytalık yaparlar. Antoine, öğleden sonra sokakta annesini başka bir erkeğin kollarında görür ve alt üst olur. Okula dönünce içinde bulunduğu ruh halini etkisiyle mazeret olarak annesinin öldüğünü iddia eder. Bunun üzerine Antoine gece babasının bürosuna gidip bir daktilo çalmak ister. Ne planlar istendiği gibi gider ne dertler biter.

Sahnelerde hep ters ilişki var, burada asıl özgürlük bir hayalet gibi (komünist manifestonun giriş bölümünde böyle bir hayalet benzetmesi yapılmakta) küçük burjuva ve konfor arayışındaki insanların arasında sadece geziniyor.
