Sakata Gintoki, bu dönemde yaşayan eski bir samuraydır. Kagura adındaki Yato klanından bir kıza, Shinpachi adındaki gözlüklü bir çocukla ve Sadaharu adındaki kocaman köpekleri ile birlikte, Yorozuya adında bir dükkan işletmektedir.
