Bay Lazarescu Bükreş’te bir apartman dairesinde tek başına, üç kedisiyle yaşayan 60’lı yaşlarında bir alkoliktir. Bir gece mide krampları ve bulantısıyla uyanınca acil servisi çağırır ve beklemeye başlar. Ambulans nihayet geldiğinde, Lazarescu’nun büyük şehir tıp dünyasındaki karanlık yolculuğu başlar; bir hastaneden diğerine sürüklenir, yanlış teşhis konur, tekrar teşhis konur, beklemeye alınır ve saatler ilerledikçe durumu kötüleşir. Neredeyse bir belgesel lezzetinde gerçekçi olan film, yönetmenin kendi tabiriyle televizyon dizisi ER ile Rohmer’i buluşturuyor ve bolca kara mizah da içeriyor.
